Let’s Talk…QiGong
What is 24 Postures Therapeutic Qigong? Qi means energy and gong means work.
Energy work. Specifically, qigong is an ancient Chinese system of physical exercises and breathing control related to, but older than tai chi. My wonderful instructors, Bill and Linda Pickett and Master George Picard, shared that these postures were assembled by Dr. Wang Zi Ping based on Qigong movements that are thousands of years old. Dr. Wang passed the movements to his son-in-law, Dr. Wu Cheng le who then systematized the set into the 20 movements. Then, he passed these postures to Masters Helen Wu and Wen-Ching Wu. Helen Wu added 4 additional postures. There is extensive research that demonstrates its effectiveness. There are many benefits to practicing qigong, including reducing stress, calming the mind, improving memory, aiding in digestion, lowering the heart rate, and reducing pain.
The 24 postures or movements are broken into 3 sections – upper, middle, and lower body. Although the postures are broken into these different sections, they affect the body from head to toe. Postures can be practiced either standing or sitting. Anyone can do this practice, which involves breath, movement, and intention. We stay in our comfort zones, working at OUR 70% for that day. I find that it’s both relaxing and energizing!
